Black Thursday? When did Black Friday become a Thanksgiving event?

It’s that time again, the holiday season is upon us with Thanksgiving now less than a week away and the infamous Black Friday following right behind. Although now, it isn’t just Black Friday, it’s Black Thursday, too. Thanksgiving Thursday, when we should all be with family and friends, is now the NEW Black Friday, with people already in line to save $40 on a Playstation bundle or get that dirt-bottom low priced HD television and Blu-Ray combo.

I am always surprised when I started seeing articles like Shoppers with tents already camping out at Best Buy, where a man and his wife spent 11, yes ELEVEN days, camped out in a tent, in a PARKING LOT in order to shop. To shop!!! I have no doubt that more tents will pop up over the next few days, but the guy in this video earns the ‘First’ title this year. Can you imagine if people lined up like this for church? To help others? What a different world we would live in!

It is because of this that I thought it was a good time to roll out a letter I wrote to Black Friday retailers a few years ago. You can read it HERE.

Once again, I pledge to not put myself in the brouhaha that is Black Friday, to shop small and support Small Business Saturday. Once again, internet sales will make up a large portion of my Christmas purchases, and the others will be from my own small retail establishment I work part-time at. I will support my store. I will not support the behemoths of retail, the ones that continue to run out the Mom & Pop businesses.

Shop Small!

Shop Small!

I urge all of you reading to take a stand. Say no to shopping on Thanksgiving. Let’s stop this trend of keeping retail workers away from their families on what at one time was a NO SHOPPING day.

Again, here is my article saying goodbye to Black Friday. Read it, share it. Let’s get the word to the retail giants that this practice is not well with the families of America. A Good Bye Letter to Black Friday Retailers.

Happy Pre-Thanksgiving Weekend!
