It is time, time to awaken to the dream that is LUZIA!

You may recall I wrote recently about the newest Cirque du Soleil show, LUZIA, and its tour stopping here in my hometown of Atlanta. I recently got the chance to attend one of the shows with my teen daughter, Bug, and we had the best time! LUZIA Atlanta is an evening like no other! 

LUZIA! is a show based around the culture of Mexico and is said to be a ‘waking dream of Mexico.’ What does that mean? It means you are going to travel to a beautiful and exotic place, all right in the middle of Atlantic Station in Downtown Atlanta, Georgia!

From the vivid colors, the music and the incredible acts, LUZIA is one word…mesmerizing! 

A Teen’s take

“The atmosphere was so fun. The concession and merchandise area was so bright and fun and I love the Big Top tent, it was huge, but it didn’t feel like we were far from the stage at all. All the acts were incredible, but I really loved the water feature, especially when the one performer had the jungle scene with the jaguar. That was really cool!”

Mom agrees

I agree with Bug, the water feature was incredible, and the jungle scene with the jaguar was one of my favorite parts. We both  were blown away by the contortionist, I remember looking over at Bug and her mouth was just as agape as mine was. We actually had a chance to meet the contortionist after the show, and even then, he was contorting himself in ways that had me transfixed! 

The atmosphere is fun and gets you ready for the show before it ever begins. Concessions included drinks, popcorn, candy and other event type foods like nachos and pretzels. There are different stations scattered in the lobby area that offer wine and other adult beverages, and be sure to bring your wallet, there is a lot of great merchandise you can buy.

 

TIP: LUZIA takes place in a series of big top tents, called the Grand Chapiteau, set up in a large parking lot next to Atlantic Station. Because of where it is located, all restrooms are of the instant, porta-potty type. Handicapped restrooms are limited. Due to my kidney disease, I had to visit the loo 3 times. Because there are a lot of people with limited facilities, you may want to time your potty breaks against the crowd. 

Is it okay for my child?

Only you can know what level of maturity your child is at, but remember, Cirque du Soliel is not the typical 3-ring circus you may recall from your youth. There are acrobats, spell-binding stunts and even some adult humor. It is great for teenagers, my daughter is 17 and enjoyed it as well as understood it (this show is in Spanish) and there was a 10 year old sitting next to us that also enjoyed it. I could hear him commenting about the stunts often, but he wasn’t exactly clear of the story and his mom kept whispering what was going on to him. I also saw some younger children, and each parent they must decide on their own, but personally I think the under 8-10 crowd will not enjoy this as much as their older counterparts. Across from us in a different area of seating, a young child cried a good bit. Like I said, only you can know if your child is ready for a show like this or not so you must make the decision that works for your family.
